HISTORY

Streetcar suburb, and a quiet civil-rights history

Platted speculatively from the 1870s, City Park West filled in through the 1880s as Denverites moved out from the center. In the 1920s, as the Ku Klux Klan held sway in city politics, Black families here defied restrictive covenants to buy homes, at real personal risk. By 1979 the area was studied together with North Capitol Hill as “Uptown.”
