HISTORY

Streetcars, bungalows, and “Capitol Heights”

Platted in the 1880s as “Capitol Heights,” the area filled in once streetcar lines and Smith’s Ditch reached the prairie east of downtown. Queen Annes and Denver Squares gave way to the brick Arts-and-Crafts bungalows the neighborhood is known for today, alongside landmarks like the Stevens School lofts and the former Bonfils (Lowenstein) Theater.
